Mark Sutton is an amazing teacher. I had the chance to sit in as a guest in his Annoyance Level 4 Class and even participate in it. It was basically scenes, scenes, and scenes. The main idea we guideline was to « React emotionnally to what is happening ».
With that in mind, we just did scenes, and woud try to identify patterns in the bundles of scenes, in regards to the guideline, such as: « there were a lot of arguments » or « the object work you brought was in reality a way to project your reactions ».
This led to some very interesting ideas, like the fact that we go into anger a lot because it’s often easier, and it frees us as it allows us to say anything. Or the importance of subtext, and how we shouldn’t give it away by talking and creating « manufactured details ». Or that an easy way of « getting out of your head » is probably to just take care of the moment and react emotionally.
Now, I have only seen one workshop, but it seems to me that the Annoyance teaching is a lot about honnest responses to « what’s there » which I completely love as a philosophy.
