Le Secret de l’Impro

January 20th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Keith Johnstone, the great guru of Improv, gave a workshop at BATS (Bay Area TheaterSports) in summer 2006. Thankfully, a member of the workshop had the good idea to film him and post the videos on google. I strongly encourage you, as an improviser, to watch this video and listen to what Johnstone says. This is a gold mine.

The Ultimate Secret of Improv seems to be very simple:

Be less interesting

Just do it. Try to be less interesting, and you immediately become more true. You let yourself be led by spontaneity, you start to show us true feelings, you stop being so stressed about all this. And you immediately become more interesting.

The other big secret that Johnstone tells us is this one:

Have a good time. And the best way to do that is to give your partner a good time, because it’ll bounce back on you.

This is so damn true. Just get your ass on stage and have a good time! Make your partners have a good time. Forget about all the stage stuff and have fun. Be there! Do stuff! Have fun!

In the end, Improv could very well be one of the best ways to learn altruism and humility. Two qualities that each one of us needs.
